ADJUSTMENTS/ MANIPULATION

The term "adjustment" refers to the highly specific manipulation Dr. Lyon applies to the spinal vertebrae that have palpably abnormal (hypomobile) movement. The objective of the chiropractic adjustment is to "reduce" or improve the subluxation, resulting in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function.

The adjustment made by Dr. Lyon consists of a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a specific vertebra, which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas. The audible 'cracking' sound is called cavitation and is primarily caused by the release of nitrogen gas which has built up in the joint that isn't moving normally. It is NOT your bones that make this cracking sound. The 'cracking' sensation relieves joint pressure which results in a sense of relief of pain. Minor discomfort can accompany the adjustment, but it usually lasts for only a short time and occurs when the surrounding muscles are in spasm, or the patient tenses up during the adjustment, or if Dr. Lyon performs the adjustment incorrectly.

There are times when joint cavitation or cracking does not occur and this may be due to either significant muscle splinting or the patient may not be adequately relaxed during the chiropractic procedure. It is also possible that a significant amount of swelling in the surrounding tissues is masking the sound. During these times, it is best if the patient relies on the Doctor's experience to determine if an adjustment actually occurred. Rarely, it is necessary to do electrical muscle stimulation and/or massage prior to attempting any spinal manipulation.
